Perry O. Hooper, III, D.O.

Dr. Perry Hooper is a Montgomery native and graduate of Trinity Presbyterian School. He attended Auburn University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences and was a walk-on running back for the Auburn Tigers. His own background in athletics gives him a personal connection to sports medicine and to patients working to return to the activities they enjoy.

Dr. Hooper earned his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Georgia, graduating as a member of the Sigma Sigma Phi Osteopathic Honor Society and serving as Student Government President. He then completed his orthopedic surgical training at Cleveland Clinic, where he served as chief resident and as a representative on the program education committee.

Following residency, Dr. Hooper pursued specialized training at Cleveland Clinic Sports Health, where he was exposed to advanced arthroscopic and reconstructive surgical techniques for sports medicine and orthopedic injuries.

As a surgical fellow, he served as an assistant team physician for local high schools and athletes at the collegiate and professional levels, including Cleveland State University, Baldwin Wallace University, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Cleveland Indians. Dr. Hooper also traveled as a team physician for Cleveland Indians Spring Training.

Dr. Hooper remains actively involved in sports medicine throughout the River Region, caring for athletes at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels. He has treated and performed surgery on numerous student-athletes from Alabama State University, Huntingdon College, Faulkner University, and local high schools, as well as players for the Montgomery Biscuits. This continued involvement in local athletics allows him to bring the advanced sports medicine experience he gained during his training back to the community where he grew up.

Shoulder injuries are an important part of Dr. Hooper’s sports medicine practice. He evaluates and treats athletes with shoulder pain and injuries that can affect strength, stability, range of motion, and athletic performance. His practice includes arthroscopic treatment of shoulder injuries, shoulder labral repair, and rotator cuff repair, helping athletes recover function and work toward a safe return to their sport.

Another distinctive part of Dr. Hooper’s practice is the treatment of hip labral tears using arthroscopic surgery. He performs arthroscopic hip labral repair for appropriate patients with a torn or damaged hip labrum, using minimally invasive techniques to treat the injured joint. His specialized training in hip arthroscopy is complemented by research involving hip injuries and membership in the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy, giving patients in the River Region access to specialized care for these injuries.

Dr. Hooper specializes in both the operative and non-operative treatment of conditions involving the shoulder, hip, knee, and elbow. His practice ranges from conservative sports medicine care to advanced arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Hooper’s goal is to restore function while keeping patients active and healthy, whether he is treating a competitive athlete, a student-athlete, or an active adult. His ability to provide both nonsurgical and surgical care allows treatment to be based on the patient’s specific injury and needs.

Dr. Hooper has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and surgical technique guides related to his research on shoulder, hip, knee, elbow, and sports-related injuries. His work has received recognition locally, nationally, and internationally, including presentations to organizations such as the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, and Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine Society.

Returning to Alabama was also personal for Dr. Hooper. He and his wife, True, both have family ties to Montgomery, and they are raising their family in the community Dr. Hooper has long called home. They have three children, Charlotte, Perry IV, and Reese.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Hooper enjoys spending time with his family, coaching, exercising, hunting, golfing, skiing, and traveling. His connection to athletics continues both personally and professionally through his involvement in sports medicine throughout the River Region.
